Nidar-the Self Defence Workshop

On the 20th of September, the Rotaract Club of RV University hosted an empowering and impactful event, Nidar: Self Defence Workshop chaired by Rtr Pannagashree and Rtr Mustafa, at the Biotech Quadrangle, RV Campus. The workshop was organized with the aim of imparting essential self-defence skills and awareness to participants, ensuring that they feel equipped and confident to handle potential threats in real-life situations. The highlight of the event was the presence of three highly skilled and experienced self-defence coaches, each bringing their unique expertise to the workshop. They began the session by discussing the importance of personal safety and the need for situational awareness in today’s world. With rising concerns about safety, especially in urban settings, the coaches emphasized that knowing how to react in dangerous situations can often be the difference between safety and harm. The workshop covered a range of critical topics, starting with the psychological aspect of self-defence. The coaches explained how body language, posture, and demeanor can deter potential attackers by projecting confidence and assertiveness. They demonstrated how a strong and alert body posture could make one less vulnerable to threats. The participants were actively involved in understanding how maintaining calm under pressure is essential, as panic can cloud judgment and delay quick responses. As the workshop progressed, it transitioned from theory to action. The participants engaged in a series of physical workouts aimed at building the strength, agility, and stamina needed to execute self-defence techniques effectively. These exercises were not only designed to teach the importance of fitness in self-defence but also to prepare participants for real-life scenarios where swift and forceful reactions may be necessary. The core of Nidar was the practical training. The coaches introduced participants to a variety of simple yet effective self-defence moves. These included techniques for blocking, escaping from holds, and deflecting attacks. The participants practiced how to break free from common forms of physical restraint and learned a range of strategic tricks to gain an advantage over an aggressor. One of the key takeaways from the session was how to use an opponent’s force against them, a tactic that requires minimal strength but maximum awareness and precision. Throughout the workshop, participants were encouraged to ask questions and practice moves under the guidance of the coaches. This hands-on approach ensured that everyone gained practical knowledge and left the session feeling more confident in their ability to protect themselves. The coaches also stressed the importance of making quick decisions and acting with decisiveness when faced with an immediate threat, noting that hesitation could often escalate a situation. Beyond physical techniques, Nidar also addressed preventive strategies. The coaches highlighted key practices that individuals could incorporate into their daily lives to reduce the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations, such as avoiding isolated areas, staying alert while commuting, and understanding the environment. By adopting these practices, participants learned how to not only defend themselves but also prevent potential dangers before they arise. The event concluded with a reflection on the importance of self-defence training as a life skill. The Rotaract Club of RV University reiterated their commitment to organizing such empowering events for the student community, focusing on holistic growth and personal safety. *Nidar* was lauded for providing an enriching, educational, and engaging experience that left the participants feeling more resilient, prepared, and empowered. The success of Nidar was evident from the positive feedback received from attendees, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the practical and life-saving knowledge they gained. This workshop has set a strong precedent for future events by the Rotaract Club of RV University, underscoring their dedication to creating opportunities for personal development and community building. Overall, Nidar was more than just a self-defence workshop; it was a step toward fostering a safer, more self-reliant community.
