About the event: Kadlekai Parishe is an annual groundnut fesƟval held in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The fesƟval is a tradiƟonal event that takes place at Kadu malleshwara temple street and Bull temple in Basavanagudi area of Bangalore, the iniƟaƟve taken is aimed to make the event a plasƟc free, liƩer free and landfill free in nature. With a vision to create a low-waste event, a dedicated team working in the field of solid waste management, comprising of like-minded civil society organisaƟons and ciƟzens teamed up with volunteers, civic authoriƟes and event organisers to form a zero waste collecƟve. PromoƟon: Local celebriƟes, ministers, BMTC, public appearances and video clips, the campaign uƟlised social media plaƞorms like Instagram and newspapers. Coverage: The campaign effort covered 2200 plus stalls in both the locaƟons of Malleswaram and Basavanagudi. It was noƟced that the groundnut stalls formed only 23% of the total stalls, followed by the food stalls which were 24% and the other stalls were 51%One of our objecƟves towards a low waste event was to make the Parishe plasƟc free, but it aimed to provide viable alternaƟves like newspaper covers, cloth bags, donne and banana leaf to all the stall vendors (not just the Kadalekai vendors). Distribute/sell: A stall was setup with signages on what should be avoided and what should be chosen instead Exchange: At the sustainability iniƟaƟve stall, a unique concept was implemented to swap old cloths for cloth bags, where people dropped off old bedsheets and took 3 to 4 bags of their choice. Seizing: The plasƟc items were seized from the stall vendors by the BBMP Marshalls supported by volunteers and members of NGOs. Awareness: Announcements and walkathon: Regular announcements were made by BBMP, volunteers, influencers, and NGO members conducted awareness walks intending liƩer free and plasƟc free environment.
