The workshop started with an introduction to the basics of sign language, including the alphabet, numbers, and common phrases such as "hello," "how are you," and "thank you." As the workshop progressed, we learned more complex sentences and conversational skills. We practiced signing with each other in pairs and small groups, with Maria Roopa providing feedback and guidance. The members were encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences with sign language, creating a supportive and interactive learning environment. Maria Roopa also shared information about the Deaf community and the significance of sign language as a means of communication and cultural expression. She emphasised the importance of respecting and understanding Deaf culture and encouraged us to continue learning and practicing sign language beyond the workshop. Overall, the sign language workshop in Cubbon Park was a valuable and informative experience for all members. Maria Roopa's passion for teaching and her patient and inclusive approach made the session enjoyable and accessible to everyone. We left the workshop with a newfound appreciation for sign language and the Deaf community, and a commitment to continue practicing and promoting sign language in our daily lives.
