The study abroad session, “Beyond Borders”, provided an insightful platform where three students who pursued higher education in different countries shared their experiences of studying abroad. These students, originally from India, represented universities from UK and Canada. The session aimed to guide aspiring students on navigating their journey toward studying abroad and highlighted key aspects such as university selection, cultural differences, challenges, and career impacts. Each student shared their personal journey of selecting a university that aligned with their goals: Focused on rankings, course modules, and faculty expertise. They emphasized the importance of researching university accreditation and speaking to alumni for better insight. They highlighted the significance of considering affordability, scholarships, and proximity to industry hubs for internships, and advised on choosing a university based on its research opportunities and global reputation in their field of study. They also stressed the importance of applying early to maximize admission and funding opportunities. The students also shared their initial struggles and how they overcame them. All three agreed that adapting to the academic style, which often required more independent learning and critical thinking than in India, was challenging at first. Learning to communicate effectively in a predominantly non-English-speaking country required extra effort. Another common challenge was adjusting to life away from home, which they tackled by engaging with student communities and participating in cultural activities. The speakers shared their experience of adapting to a more informal classroom setting where professors were approachable, and interactive discussions were encouraged. They also highlighted cultural shocks, such as differing social norms, food habits, and festival celebrations, which eventually became learning opportunities. Also, they observed a more inclusive and diverse environment that allowed them to interact with peers from around the world, broadening their perspectives. The students reflected on how studying abroad shaped their professional aspirations, emphasizing the advantage of studying in an international environment, which improved their adaptability and cross-cultural communication skills. Each speaker highlighted how access to global networks and internships in leading organizations positioned them for a strong career start. They all agreed that studying abroad enhanced their problem-solving, critical thinking, and confidence—qualities highly valued by employers. The session provided valuable takeaways for aspiring students considering higher education abroad. The insights shared by the three students highlighted not only the benefits but also the challenges of studying abroad, helping attendees gain a realistic understanding of what to expect. The key message was that thorough planning, adaptability, and open-mindedness are crucial to making the most of the international education experience.
