The Rotaract Club of Jyoti Nivas College, in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Utkarsh, organized an online session titled ICONS AND IDEALS on March 23. This Women's Day special event aimed to celebrate inspiring female leaders and explore diverse perspectives on feminism. The discussion revolved around the impact of women in various fields, the challenges they have faced, and the steps they have taken to break barriers. Participants engaged in thought-provoking conversations about what women can do to make a difference and how they can take the lead in society. The session highlighted influential figures such as Rosalind Franklin, whose work in X-ray crystallography was pivotal in discovering DNA’s structure, though her contributions were overlooked. Mary Kom, a six-time world boxing champion, was recognized for breaking gender norms in sports. Neerja Bhanot’s bravery as a flight attendant, who sacrificed her life to save passengers during the 1986 Pan Am hijacking, was deeply admired. The discussion also featured Rukmini Devi Arundale, who redefined Bharatanatyam and took it to global heights, and Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian woman in space, whose dedication to exploration continues to inspire. Beyond celebrating these icons, the session encouraged open dialogue by asking participants what they believed women should do to create change and gain leadership positions. The discussion became even more engaging when some participants expressed their views on gender differences, stating that men and women are inherently different as per nature or divine creation. While some supported the idea of equal opportunities, others questioned the concept of feminism, believing that roles should remain distinct. This contrast in opinions sparked a dynamic conversation, highlighting the need for continued discussions on gender roles and empowerment. The session concluded with a powerful takeaway: the journey toward equality and leadership is not just an individual effort but a collective responsibility. By learning from the lives of these inspiring women and reflecting on diverse perspectives, participants recognized that true empowerment comes from education, resilience, and mutual support. ICONS AND IDEALS served as a reminder that every woman has the potential to lead and create change, and it is up to society to ensure they have the opportunities to do so. As the discussion ended, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose—to advocate, uplift, and continue the conversation on women’s empowerment beyond just one day of celebration.
