KMF - Industrial Visit

BMS College of Engineering, Basavanagudi

Description

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: An industrial visit to KMF Bangalore offers insights into dairy processing and product manufacturing. Students observe milk collection, pasteurization, packaging, and quality control. The plant produces Nandini products like milk, ghee and butter. It showcases modern technology and efficient dairy operations. The visit also highlights KMF’s support for rural dairy farmers. EVENT DESCRIPTION: "INDUSTRIAL VISIT" to Karnataka milk federation (KMF) was successfully conducted on 23rd April 2025. The industrial visit to the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) in Bengaluru was an enriching and educational experience for the students, offering an in-depth view into one of the largest and most organized dairy cooperatives in India. The visit began with a warm welcome and a brief introduction by KMF officials about the organization's history, objectives, and its significance in supporting rural dairy farmers across Karnataka through the Nandini brand. Students were taken on a guided tour of the facility, starting from the milk reception dock where milk tankers arrive from various village-level collection centers. Here, they witnessed how the milk is first tested for quality and fat content before being accepted for further processing. The guide explained the importance of maintaining cold chain logistics to preserve milk quality during transport. The tour continued into the chilling and storage section, where large stainless-steel silos keep the milk at optimal temperatures before pasteurization. The students observed the entire pasteurization process, where milk is heated and then rapidly cooled to eliminate harmful bacteria while preserving nutritional value. Following this, they explored the packaging unit, where advanced automated systems fill, seal, and label milk packets ready for distribution. Beyond milk, the guide demonstrated how various value-added dairy products like curd, butter, ghee, paneer, and flavored milk are manufactured in separate sections of the plant. Each step was accompanied by explanations on hygiene protocols, quality control measures, and the technology used to ensure product consistency. The visit concluded with a Q&A session, where students interacted with KMF staff to clarify doubts and gain further insights into supply chain management, cooperative farming, and the socio-economic impact of KMF on rural communities. Students also received freshly prepared 25g of Peda, 25g of MSP, 20g of cookies, 200 ml of Buttermilk from the plant. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS: Exceptional Planning and Coordination: The organizing team, led by the project chairs and Rotaract core committee, demonstrated meticulous planning. Three preparatory visits were conducted to the KMF plant to finalize logistics. All details—including group size, safety protocols, event flow, and communication—were carefully addressed. Seamless Execution on Event Day: Due to thorough planning, the visit was smooth, professional, and well-structured. Insightful Industrial Exposure: Participants experienced a guided walkthrough of real-time operations such as: Milk reception Pasteurization Automated packaging This gave them rare, hands-on exposure to large-scale dairy processing. Interactive Learning: Engaging Q&A sessions were held with KMF officials. Topics discussed included: Supply chain logistics Cooperative business models Rural economic impact Personalized Experience: Students were treated to freshly prepared KMF products: Peda Cookies Buttermilk Mysore Pak This added a warm, hospitable touch and showcased KMF’s product quality. BEHIND THE SCENES: We successfully organized an industrial visit to the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to provide students with firsthand exposure to real-time industrial practices in the dairy sector, complementing their academic learning. The planning process involved close coordination with our faculty coordinator, drafting a detailed proposal, and obtaining formal approval from the principal. Regular meetings between the Points of Contact (POCs) and the Rotaract core team ensured smooth communication, responsibility delegation, and efficient handling of registrations, transportation, and logistics. To ensure a seamless experience, we conducted three preparatory visits to the KMF plant to meet with administrative and technical staff. These visits helped us clarify essential details such as timing, group size, safety protocols, dress code, and expected conduct. The cooperation from the KMF team, coupled with proactive planning, ensured that all participants were well-informed and the visit was executed smoothly. IMPACT ON ATTENDEES: Overall, the visit bridged classroom learning with real-world industrial practices, enhancing the students understanding of food technology, logistics, and cooperative business models. Students were able to get a clear insight on all the procedures and machineries involved.
