BMS College of Engineering, Basavanagudi

Description

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Code to Career, organized by the Rotaract Club of BMSCE, focused on guiding students through career opportunities in the Computer Science field. Alumni professionals shared insights on internships, placements, skill development, startups, and networking—helping participants navigate the journey from learning to launching a successful tech career. EVENT DESCRIPTION: Code to Career, organized by the Rotaract Club of BMSCE, was a structured guidance session aimed at helping students in the Computer Science and related fields navigate their professional journeys with clarity and confidence. The event brought together distinguished alumni and Rotaract leaders—Rtr. Advaith V (Business Analyst at Cisco, Past President – Rotaract Club of BMSCE 2023–24) and Rtr. Kratharth (Software Engineer 3 at Qualcomm, Treasurer – Rotaract Club of BMSCE 2019–20)—who shared actionable insights drawn from their college experiences and professional journeys. The first segment featured individual talks covering academic and career planning across all four years of engineering, with emphasis on building the right foundation, choosing domains, avoiding common pitfalls, and preparing for a successful transition into the industry. The second segment was an engaging panel discussion that addressed the various challenges students face, such as identifying the right learning platforms, managing time for skill development, evaluating internships, building a strong network, and making informed decisions about job roles and company culture. The session also touched upon entrepreneurship, research opportunities, and the importance of standing out in a competitive landscape. The event concluded with a dynamic Q&A, allowing students to raise their doubts and receive candid advice directly from the panelists. With its practical orientation and open format, Code to Career served as a valuable bridge between classroom learning and real-world expectations, inspiring attendees to take charge of their careers with purpose and planning. SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS: Structured Career Roadmap: A comprehensive year-wise plan was shared, highlighting what students should focus on during each stage of their engineering journey—including academics, internships, skill-building, and career exploration. Real-world Industry Guidance: Practical do’s and don’ts were shared based on real work experiences, covering critical topics like evaluating internship opportunities, selecting the right coding platforms, and avoiding common early-career mistakes. Strong Focus on Networking & Rotaract Role: The speakers highlighted how involvement in Rotaract played a key role in building their professional networks and developing essential soft skills. IMPACT ON ATTENDEES: Practical strategies for skill development beyond academics, including aptitude and coding preparation. Received guidance on identifying and evaluating internship opportunities, both within and outside the college. Felt motivated to participate in hackathons, competitions, and startup initiatives. Benefited from real-world advice on avoiding common pitfalls and building a strong professional profile. BEHIND THE SCENES: The event preparation began with a core team meeting to plan the overall flow, identify the target audience, and decide on the key topics to cover. Following this, the team researched and reached out to potential panelists through LinkedIn to find professionals who could offer valuable insights. To tailor the event content to students’ needs, a Google Form was circulated to gather their expectations and questions related to placements and career guidance. Based on these responses, the team held detailed discussions with the panelists to assign specific topics, finalize the agenda, and build a good rapport, ensuring a smooth and focused event delivery.
