Rotaract Bangalore South Parade (RBSP) participated in an inspiring and adventurous Workshop on Mountaineering, organized by Rotaract Club of Bangalore Spandana in association with Rotary Bangalore Spandana. The session was conducted by Rtr. Oishik Roy, President of RaC Bangalore Spandana, who passionately took us through the thrilling world of mountaineering—its challenges, triumphs, and essential skills. The session began with an insightful introduction to the world of hiking, trekking, and mountaineering, distinguishing each by terrain, duration, gear required, and associated risks. The detailed comparison helped everyone understand how each activity escalates in intensity and preparation—from day hikes to months-long mountaineering expeditions in the Himalayas. Rtr. Oishik then introduced us to essential mountaineering equipment such as ice axes, crampons, harnesses, ropes, GPS devices, and avalanche safety tools. He explained the function of each item using vivid visuals, which made even the most technical gear easy to understand. This part of the session had everyone going “Ahhh!” as we realized how crucial each element is for survival and success in high-altitude terrains. We also learned about India’s premier mountaineering institutes like NIM (Uttarkashi), HMI (Darjeeling), NIMAS (Dirang), and ABVIMAS (Manali), as well as the national certification courses they offer. From basic to advanced mountaineering and search-and-rescue programs, the opportunities to explore this field were laid out with clarity and inspiration. Overall, the session was super inspiring, filled with rich insights and practical knowledge. It opened our eyes to the world of mountaineering—not just as a sport, but as a disciplined and courageous pursuit that demands both mental and physical strength.
