Protecting the ‘Temple of life’- Early screening prevents Cervical Cancer!
A Project by MediKardia 2025-26
Objectives of the Camp:
1.To screen and identify women at high risk for cervical cancer via Pap smear testing.
2.To raise awareness about cervical cancer and general reproductive health, lifestyle changes and hygienic practices.
3.To provide free screening for blood pressure and blood sugar levels
Camp Structure and Activities
It was organized into seven well-coordinated stations:
1. Registration Desk
Patient details were recorded in two separate registers — one for Rashi Diagnostics to track suspected cervical cancer cases (Pap smear), and the second being MediKardia’s annual project Register for documenting the total incoming public including for general screenings (BP and blood sugar).
2. General Examination & BP Check
BP readings, Basic vitals and general health assessments were carried out to identify cases of hypertension, high readings were noted and marked for counselling.
3. Blood Sugar Screening
Random blood glucose tests were performed. High readings were noted and marked for counselling.
4. OBG Consultation
One-on-one consultations were provided by gynecologists, focusing on menstrual, reproductive, and menopausal health. Breast examination followed by per abdomen examination was performed as well.
5. Pap Smear Station
Conducted under supervision of Dr. Aparna Nair MD. OBG, in a closed, private room to ensure patient comfort. The procedure was explained clearly, and patients were guided respectfully throughout. Slides were prepared for storage and naming of each slide with name and serial number of the female was done meticulously.
6. Counseling Station
Brief counseling on reproductive and lifestyle health was provided to promote awareness and preventive care. Hypertensives and borderline Diabetes patients were made aware of available dietary options and advised to take up daily physical activity.
7. Outreach & Marketing Team
Successfully mobilized the community, ensured good turnout, and helped maintain patient flow across all stations.
The 7 teams had the chance to work in each station on an hourly basis. Each team worked cohesively, ensuring a patient-friendly environment throughout the camp.
SUMMARY:
GarbhaGudi 1.0 was successful in screening 38 women for cervical cancer, out of which 5 cases showed active infections (including 3 cases of vaginitis and 2 of bacterial vaginosis), 27 smears exhibited nonspecific inflammatory changes, and 6 samples were reported as cytologically normal. Importantly, no evidence of malignancy or dysplasia was detected in any of the samples.
Impact and Reflections:
The true impact, however, was through spreading awareness about cervical cancer-a preventable disease that affects nearly 18% of women in India. By educating participants about regular screening, HPV vaccination, and early detection, the camp empowered women to take charge of their reproductive health and fostered community-wide awareness about this significant public health issue.
